Grinding its way uphill beneath the telltale that protects the west portal of Tunnel # 2, this seven-unit set of WP power prepares for a tough slog to the summit, just as it once did under similar conditions in Niles Canyon, back on a rain-slicked afternoon in the autumn of 1982. As a reference point, this photograph was roughly based on a photo taken by Ken Rattenne, and published on page # 55 of his book "Feather River Route: Part One." (You'll have to forgive the substitution of a GP-9 for a GP-20 in the original photo, but Steve didn't have one of those in the proper colors.)
